Corpse garden Ulfenkarn

The Ruwenlant’ by Jonathan O'Donoghue

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound Ulfenkarn: City at the Edge of Death. What's new? An important goal we set ourselves when collecting and expanding the many aspects of the Cursed City was to generate a wide range of adventure locations for GMs to weave into their grim and perilous adventures; from small, narrative-focussed locations dotted about the city, to key aspects of the city’s infrastructure and layout, all the way up to our major adventure locations. Today, we’re going to give you a sneak peek into one of those places, known to the citizens of Ulfenkarn as The Corpse Gardens.

The Corpse Gardens sit at the centre of a district outside the city walls known as the Ruwenlant. It was once a place where the dead could rest peacefully, a revered and meticulously maintained sanctuary where citizens of Mournhold could come and commune directly with their ancestors. The entire district is a mortuary from one end to the other, with rolling hills covered in gravesites, tombs, and temples dedicated to Nagash.

However, when the Necroquake turned the realm of Shyish on its head, spirits and cadavers rose from their graves and attacked the city’s walls, driven to attack the living people inside. Since then, the Ruwenlant has become one of the most perilous districts in Ulfenkarn. Deadwalker Zombies still stumble about looking for fresh flesh, and more corpses rise every night, buoyed by the fiendish work of the enigmatic Gorslav the Gravekeeper.

Corpse Gardens Map’ by Jog Brogzin

The centre of the Corpse Gardens is a former temple of Nagash that has now been claimed by Gorslav as his personal domain. The gravesites surrounding this temple have been rearranged and replanted in perfectly uniform positions, and the charnel pits between them contain the cadavers of Radukar’s enemies and betrayers, given to Gorslav to both punish and bolster his horde.

This significant adventure location is divided into three sub-areas. The surrounding Gardens are a gauntlet of risen undead, where one false step could see you dragged down into a fresh grave. The Temple itself is effectively Gorslavs’s toolshed, and home and a terrible corpse amalgam that forever plays discordant tunes on the temple’s pipe organ. The Mortuary beneath the Temple holds ancient spirits and secrets, connecting further into the city’s underground catacombs.

Gorslav the Gravekeeper’ by Siman Vlaisavljević

Most citizens know to avoid the Ruwenlant and the Corpse Gardens, but there are some who know of the buried treasures and plentiful grave goods to be found within. Others may wish to seek out the Gravekeeper himself, For surely slaying this half-living necromancer would strike a mighty blow against Radukar’s regime and would, at the very least, greatly impede the raising of more Deadwalker Zombies.

That’s all for today, we hope you enjoyed this short tour. We’ll have more to share with you from the Cursed City as we approach the release date! In the meantime, those looking for another sneak preview of Ulfenkarn should check out Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound, Vossheim’s Holdouts – a fantastic one-shot grim and perilous Soulbound adventure set during the Necroquake and Radukar’s usurpation of the city.
